Driving in Tunisia is simple and accessible, provided you know a few local rules and habits. Here are the essentials for hitting the road with peace of mind.
In Tunisia, you drive on the right and overtake on the left, as in Europe. Speed limits are generally 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and 110 km/h on the motorway. Wearing a seatbelt is mandatory for all passengers, and using a phone while driving is forbidden without a hands-free kit.
The main road network is in good condition, especially the motorways linking Tunis to Sousse, Sfax and Hammamet. Some secondary roads or southern tracks can be rougher: adjust your speed and prefer an SUV if you are exploring the country's interior.
In town, driving can be lively, with dense traffic in Tunis and the large cities. Stay alert to motorcycles, pedestrians and roundabouts where priority is not always respected. Anticipate and keep your distance.
